Wings of Light

During the final term of my second year, we were asked to design a one-square-metre pop-up for a brand that could be presented in de Bijenkorf or another department store. The brand’s products would be displayed and sold from this space.

I chose Moooi because its style strongly appeals to me. I am especially drawn to the soft colours, unusual forms and design-led atmosphere. During my research I found lamps featuring origami birds, which became the starting point for my own design.

I began experimenting with folding, attaching and suspending different shapes and birds. The result was a large, dreamlike lamp in which the birds seem to fly further and further outwards. The idea is that they emerge from the lamp, creating a sense of freedom, movement and imagination. The light forms and the way the birds float through space give the result a soft, dreamlike character that suits Moooi’s distinctive world.

My concept board needed to communicate Wings of Light without defining a concrete solution too early. I then developed a design that was both achievable and true to the concept and brand. I always try to realise my designs as faithfully as possible, and this project succeeded. I still enjoy the lamp every day; it hangs beautifully in my living room.
